Magda El Kateb

I was born with a defect in my spine and, although I was living life normally, I decided to have surgery in Germany at the age of seventeen to avoid any complications in the future. However, as a result of a medical error, I became partially paralyzed.

My name is Magda El Kateb. I am the head of the People with Disabilities Unit at the High Electoral Commission.

It was difficult for me to accept my injury at first. I went through a period of depression and despair. I got used to being in a wheelchair, though. I faced the fact that I had to accept God's will and move on with my life even though I had always been strong.

I faced many difficulties as any person with a disability would. Commuting in public places and being perceived negatively by society were especially difficult. I managed to overcome them with patience and determination.

My dream was to specialize in the field of law, so I decided to enroll in the Open University. I graduated with distinction. That was the first step towards a new life in which I am motivated to succeed.

The real challenge was at work when I got my first job in the legal affairs unit of the Social Solidarity Fund. I decided to use my experience to defend the rights of people with disabilities.

In 2018, I was appointed as the Head of the People with Disabilities Unit in the High Elections Commission. I work hard to obtain the rights of persons with disabilities in all its forms and to enhance their political participation.

My biggest dream is to see competent people with disabilities occupying leadership positions in government.
