Many think that words can't bring change, especially in a country like Libya but I discovered that blogging holds power beyond expectations and a free voice can reveal the truth and ignite change.

I am Anas Algabsi, a blogger and a civil activist.

With the February 17 revolution in 2011, a new phase in my life began. I felt a responsibility greater than just achieving a career. The political and social change taking place in Libya motivated me to contribute. In 2018, I traveled to complete my master’s degree in civil engineering. There, far from home, I discovered that distance couldn't prevent me from being a part of Libya instead, connected me more.

Living abroad, I found my voice in writing. I started blogging on Facebook to express my agitation for the Libya I aspired and boldly critiqued the raw corruption in institutions. I found freedom through writing to exercise my right to expression and responsibility as a Libyan citizen who believed that change began with a free voice.

I realized that blogging was more than just a personal act but a role with responsibility. I found myself speaking for a large segment of young people who aspire for change. I wrote about the importance of presidential and parliamentary elections, as they are a key step for Libyans to select who rules and legislates laws. I focused on the necessity of developing a comprehensive constitution on which the future of a democratic Libya can be built.

Blogging has changed me fully. I was a young man that wanted to build cities once and now a person seeking to build a nation, starting with building awareness of freedom of speech. I believe that an individual's role may seem small, but it can make a difference if they have courage and clarity.

Today, thirteen years later, blogging has become part of my quest to build a generation that aspires to restore Libya’s hope. I believe that change begins with freedom of speech and honesty. I hope that my letters serve as a step towards building the Libya we all dream of.
